I’ve been really lucky with ARCs lately! Simon & Schuster Canada sent me

  • The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer. Memory is such a tricky and important part of who we are that someone with no memories always catches my interest.
  • Dust & Decay. This is book 2, I still need to read Rot and Ruin but that’s been on my list for months.
  • Fury has a gorgeous cover. I love the way her beautiful red hair looks like flames. I don’t know much about it but it looks good.
  • Witchlanders sounds like it has some interesting magic. I like that Lena Coakley is Canadian, I want to read more books from my own country.

Also, the library finally (I requested before it was published so it’s not fair for me to be impatient) got the Star Wars Craft Book and I want to make everything in it. I’ll probably have to settle for about 90% seeing as I’m a tight budget, but it looks fantastic. I already made the Admiral Ackbar puppet at the Star Wars party a few months ago (I saw this design online) and I am now debating about what to make next. I want to put it out there that I want more geeky craft books. Books of crafts based on the shows, novels and movies I obsess over. Oooo Hunger Games Craft Book! If you make one- send it to me or tell me where to buy it.

I also want to thank Perma-Bound for sending my library a ton of posters. I asked about them at CLA and voila a copy of each for all 29 branches in my system. They even threw in calendars.  Awesome stuff.

Plus I know my next IMM will be awesome because I’ve been told more books are on the way. How shall I keep up??? I’ve been working extra hours doing school visits and I took another part-time position in another branch of my library, while keeping up my 2 volunteer tutoring positions, and working on making CLASY an official network- so I don’t have the abundance of time I once did.

This week I received

My repaired/ (I suspect) replaced Kobo! Yay, now I can get back to reading the digital ARCs I have been e-mailed. Since the machine is brand new or wiped of memory lost everything from NetGalley that is now expired in my digital editions. No hassles from Kobo about getting a new one and it was much faster than I expected.

Sorry to the authors who sent me works that I didn’t get to read or review, I hope this Kobo will work smoothly and I will get caught up on the reviews I can still do.

I also received an ARC of Wildefire by Karsten Knight from Simon & Schuster Canada (Canada Post forgot to give me the pick up slip so it may have been there for a long time)

This week I got StoryWorld and the Fairy Magic edition of Storyworld. These are decks of cards that greatly resemble Tarot cards but they make no claim of predicting the future or interpreting the present. Instead they are meant to inspire storytellers.

There are many ways to use them , you can shuffle them pick out a few that will be elements in a story you are writing, you can hand everyone in a group a card and have them incorporate the object, idea or person on the card (grandma, cat, knight, fairy, ect) into the story. I think they’re really cool and I look forward to trying them out.

I also purchased Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog the Book. I learned a lot about how grassroots the project was. Of course not just anyone has access to Fox’s wardrobe stuff or the equipment Joss had, but I still think it’s pretty amazing that it all came together so well. This book isn’t for everyone, just hard-core fangirls/fanboys.

This week I got a package of awesome from Simon & Schuster Canada.

I got City of Fallen Angels in hardcover, a poster and some buttons!

I can’t wait to read the book, I might have to jump right to it, skipping my TBR pile.  I think I’ll put the poster up in the teen room of my library for now, and when we update that to something newer in a few months I’ll take it home and put by my bookshelf. I will keep one button, and use the others for prizes. I think I might have to throw a Mortal Instruments party at the library when the movie comes out. The Harry Potter Party and Star Wars party went so well, and maybe this would bring in an older crowd… oh the possibilities!

I also purchased

Goldie Socks and the Three Libearians from Bookingham Palace, a store in the same mall as my library. It’s a super-cute take on Goldie Locks and the Three Bears. I’ve started collecting librarian books, and this is one of my favourites. I’ve also ordered Library Dragon and a doll that goes with it, but that hasn’t come in yet.

Advanced Reader Copies for review

Simon & Schuster Canada was kind enough to send me:

thanks Michelle!

Won

From Beth Revis (they are at work I will add a picture later)

  • 2 autographed bookmarks
  • 1 autographed postcard
  • 1 autographed sticker

I entered that contest using my library info so the bookmarks and postcards wil4 books & an ebook on my couchl go to participating teens at the library. I swiped the sticker for myself because it’s awesome and I entered the contest in my free time 😉

Purchased

At Bookingham Palace:

  • Across The Universe by Beth Revis (I put my autograph sticker in the book, this is partly why I was so impatient to buy it. Marketing strategies work a little too well on me sometimes) The cover is delightful, I like to buy beautiful books, I’m shallow that way.

From the Kobo store

  • XVI by Julia Karr this looks both horrifying and awesome. I have the e-book on my computer and my Kobo, meaning it will be my lunchbreak/out and about book not my lazy day or nighttime book, probably for the best because I think I’m going to find it disturbing (in a that’s horrible but I’m glad you wrote about it kind of way).

Both of my purchased books will count towards the 2011 Debut Author Challenge.

Borrowed

From the ORL:

  • Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld. I’m enjoying the Uglies series so far and I’ve heard great things about this other series by Westerfeld. It appeals to boys, and I’ve been wanting to read more guy friendly YA. I believe this one will count towards the Historical Fiction Challenge (even though it has fantastical elements).

IMM is a meme started by the Story Siren it gives me an excuse to show off books and shiny new toys that I’ve gotten.

This week I picked up some library books for the road, and by road I mean air since I wanted reading material for the plane ride home.

Christmas Gift from my Brother

That’s right! I got a Kobo for Christmas!!!! My little brother is the bestest. My Kobo came with 101 books, mostly classics that I heard about a lot doing my English degree but never got around to reading myself. Now I will, and next time I travel I won’t have to break my back carrying heavy books in my purse (ya I was lopsided it was so heavy).

So far I LOVE my Kobo and everyone teased me because I didn’t put it down most of yesterday 🙂 I will be reviewing some e-books and talking about my adjustment to the format change soon.

I don’t have much time to read this week but loooove what’s in my mailbox
